If you straightened out the shore line of Maine it would reach from Portland to Panama, for the great ice age left thousands of harbors and hideaways between Kittery and Passamaquoddy. Shown here is a cove near Ogunquit, stretching from Short Sands Beach (foreground) to Lobster Point, which the beacon marks. Leif the Lucky probably sailed past this ragged coast in his Viking ships a thousand years ago. He was folowed by a host of Spaniards, Frenchmen, and Englishmen. Spanish interests lay elsewhere, but the French and English turned Maine into a battleground and generally raised hob over these parts for the best part of a century.
