I wanted so badly to like it! I was looking for a Biblical book on how to think Biblically and "What Would Jesus Think?" seemed to fit the bill. I excitedly rushed to my local library to pick it up. When I began reading it, though, I was sorely disappointed. Ms. Whelchel focuses her book on the ability of human self-effort to change negative thought patterns to conform to Biblical principles. She has a great, conversational style that proclaims, "You can do it!" Unfortunately, the Bible is clear that "You can't!" Jesus Christ Himself said that we can do nothing apart from Him (John 15:5). I, for one, have experienced enough heartbreaking failure in trying to live the Christian life on my own power that I have finally learned to stay far away from any teaching that tells me to "just do it". Another problem I found in trying to read this book was the author's assertion that once you bring your thought-life under control (again, by your own efforts), then you will live in absolute victory for the rest of your life. Say what? The Bible is very clear on the fact that no Christian will ever be perfect this side of heaven - not when we are still living in our human, imperfect bodies (Romans 7). The honest truth is that I should have put this book down after reading the introduction, in which the author describes a friend of hers who was "rescued" from depression and impure thoughts by her methods and now lives in "victory" every day. Our victory should come from living in Jesus every day, not living in pride over our own self-efforts. "What would Jesus Do?" has several very helpful tips for redirecting your thoughts away from the sinful, worldly patterns our minds tend to fall into, but there are many resources that address this issue from a true Biblical perspective (I have listed some of the ones I have found most helpful below). As much as I hate to write a bad review, I can't recommend this book because of its premise that victorious Christian living is nothing more than "giving it your best shot". Books I would recommend instead: Loving the Lord your God with all your Mind by Elizabeth George The Complete Green Letters by Miles Stamford Saving Life of Christ by Major Ian Thomas Birthright by David C.
