![]() Where The Wild Things Are Original Motion Picture Soundtrack: Original Songs By Karen O And The Kids $13.98 I play this CD in the car when I pick up my 5 year-old from school. Since I also have an infant, it keeps her calm in the car. My 5 year-old finds the music calming as well and gives her a moment to unwind until we get home. The children's voices are purely magical! ![]() Where the Boys Are $19.98 Suntans, first love, jazz, date rape. And all in one film. "Where the Boys Are" ushered in the 60's, perhaps unwittingly, with its portrayal of half a dozen teens on Spring Break and their new attitudes about sex, life, and sex. Dolores Hart (now a Mother Superior in real life) plays a privileged Midwestern girl with very progressive ideas about interpersonal relations, while Yvette Mimieux's tragic character learns the hard way the lessons of promiscuity, at least according to Hollywood at the time. A very enjoyable film, and a nostalgic final glance back at the fading 1950's, as a new generation was about to make its mark on the social mores of Spring Break and the new world of the 60's. ![]() Where the Wild Things Are $17.95 Maurice Sendak's wonderful art is the first thing that hits you about this book. The story is simple - a boy does naughty things, is sent off to bed without dinner. He goes (in his mind) to a fantasy land where the wild things are... but hunger makes him return to his room - to find a hot dinner waiting for him there. Mommy did not have the heart to *really* send him to bed without dinner after all! The text lends itself to a nice rhythmic reading, there's lots of drama in it with monsters and partying. Yet the little boy in the middle of his wild freedom, wants parental comfort: "And Max, the king of all wild things, was lonely and wanted to be where someone loved him best of all." To give an idea of the poetic nature of the story, here's a snippet, where Max travels back from the place where the wild things are: "... sailed back over a year and in and out of weeks and through a day..." I love the way reality and fantasy are spun together in this story. My kids, 5.5 yrs and 3.5 yrs, love the book as well. ![]() Where's Waldo? The Complete Collection $45.00 I do not see these softcover books standing the test-of-time with kiddos, but still worth every penny. |
