War and the Soul: Healing Our Nation's Veterans from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
War and the Soul: Healing Our Nation's Veterans from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

This is one of many useful readings for those who want to assuage the psychological wounds of war and help returning warriors re-weave themselves into to tapestry of daily life.

Turning from physical battlefronts abroad, the soldier is forced to countenance the frontline phantoms of spiritual warfare, the terrain of which is scarred, craggy, plummeting and perilous - carved into the topography of the soul.
From these arduous and internal peaks and valleys, the returning warrior reconnoiters, often through blurred and bewildered eyes.
"War and the Soul" helps identify these invisible angels and demons - bolstering and elevating the former, while shunting the latter into common national ground.

It points out the disconnect between the archetypal and honorable `warrior rites of passage' of old - rites that foster maturity in those who are asked to countenance war - and the uniformed McSoldiers of the present, whose alienated rinds and wrappers are often slowly, though systematically abandoned by both a remote and self-absorbed society, and by a cold, indifferent bureaucracy.
Recognition and understanding of this brand of immaturity and oversight is in order for it to be adequately facilitated.

However, use caution because the book seems rife with `Blame America First' fallacies.
Keep in mind that the "spread of communism" is imperialistic totalitarianism, and that the communist North Vietnamese were the conquering aggressors.
Remember Pol-Pot and Mau Tse-tung.
The role of the U.S. in Viet Nam, as irresolute and misguided as it turned out to be, was in defense of liberty and democracy.

Remember that the spread of Nazi fascism was imperialistic.
Keep in mind that global jihad is also colonial fascism.
The WTC was on American soil, as is the Pentagon.
America is not an aggressor or imperialistic, nor establishes colonies.

Remember this from Colin Powell:

"And when all those conflicts were over, what did we do? Did we stay and conquer? Did we say, `OK, we defeated Germany. Now Germany belongs to us? We defeated Japan, so Japan belongs to us?' No. What did we do? We built them up. We gave them democratic systems which they have embraced totally to their soul. And did we ask for any land? No, the only land we ever asked for was enough land to bury our dead. And that is the kind of nation we are."

If the execution of our people in the 9-11 attack bound us in a pre-arranged and non-consensual "marriage" to Islamic Jihadists (p. 262,) then, killing them in their acts of imperialist aggression is to impose legitimate divorce.

C.S. Lewis, in the chapter on "Forgiveness," in "Mere Christianity," wrote:

"All killing is not murder any more than all sexual intercourse is adultery. When soldiers came to St John the Baptist asking what to do, he never remotely suggested that they leave the army: nor did Christ when He met a Roman sergeant-major - what they call a centurion."
