This book is absolutely exquisite! I only hope that someday I can read it in its original Arabic.
Every piece included is absolute magic, but the two longer pieces, "The Hoopoe" and "Mural" are my favorites. "Mural" reads like a mixture of Eliot's "Four Quartets" and random passages by Fernando Pessoa in THE BOOK OF DISQUIET. And "The Hoopoe" is very reminiscent of Yeats's "The Second Coming."
Please read this book if you love Darwish, or choose this one as a starting point if you're not yet acquainted. It's magnificent.

OMG I just now thought to see if Amazon.com had this classic from my childhood -- OF COURSE they do. I was born in 1958 and both my parents were University professors so we had all the books in the world.
THIS IS THE ONE THAT STANDS OUT THE MOST IN MY MEMORY. I can't wait to see it again!

I was fascinated by this story as a young girl, but had no idea how I would look back on it in my adulthood and realize it pointed me in the direction of my intense spiritual quest.... you know, as opposed to the intellectualism I grew up with. Or maybe: in addition to.

Anyway, it so beautifully and simply captures the essence of BIG BIG questions, such as: When something "bad" happens, is it really so bad? How can we know what is just around the corner? (In this book -- just turn the page to see!). What are we are being prepared for? Why wouldn't we have faith that it will all turn out okay in the end? When something "good" happens, is it really so great? Is getting what we (think we) want the best thing all the time?

I love how this childhood book of mine predicted my path away from dualistic thinking.... there IS NO fortunately & unfortunately.

"Dualistic thinking" from WikiAnswers: Both sides of the dualistic mind are blind, and when they see - they become self aware and merge together forming a unified mind, or One mind - transcending all forms of relativity and becoming self sustaining. Thus, the true key to life is to transcend the duality consciousness.
