A Practical Guide to Ubuntu Linux (Versions 8.10 and 8.04) (2nd Edition)
A Practical Guide to Ubuntu Linux (Versions 8.10 and 8.04) (2nd Edition)

I am sure the book is a good one for somebody out there somewhere, but for me, it was a bit of an overkill. It has gotten to be too nerdy as well as too complicated in the instructions. This is the kind of book that you would understand only if you were an expert in using Linux Ubuntu. So, if you're an expert, then why would you need this book. So excuse me while I go shoot my foot.

Ubuntu Linux Toolbox is another great book to get a lot more familiar with Linux and the command line. The book is broken up into separate parts just like most IT functions are now.

Sections include managing the file system and mounting disks, formating disks, Logical disks. Network section on how to on Networking, covers ssh, sshfs and all the sections have example commands that you can try out. Never seen a book covers such a multitude of command line how tos. If you are trying to break out from the (GUI Windows world), into the REAL World of computing this is one of a hand full that would benefit your education and job.

Ubuntu 9.10 and Kubuntu 9.10, 4-disks DVD Set Includes Linux Training Library, "Introduction to Linux" video-DVD, also includes printed Quick Reference Card of Linux commands, 32-bit Set

This is seems to be the only complete Ubuntu-Kubuntu Linux set suitable for a beginner. The included reference material is helpful and accurate, the video introduction is very helpful for first time Linux users as it provides information on most important commands. There are explanations for a number of features I wasn't sure about. Linux distributions are all built from the similar collection of components. The open source world offers lots of choice and the mix of components in any particular distribution will defer. Individual distributions pick from these similar components and combine them to create a more comprehensive set of tools which they then further refine to operate as a total set of computing tools. Ubuntu is often called "Linux for non-geeks", I wanted to get into more advanced topics with the command line and have better control over my Ubuntu machine and the video and reference card definitely help!
Yes, I absolutely would recommend it to a friend.
