![]() Apache: The Definitive Guide (3rd Edition) $39.95 Now you may think that there are better books out there. And there maybe. However this book is a "five star" book. I bought this book for a beginning apache class. We were able to follow the instructions and down load the Apache server from the Internet. The only problem we had was with the NIS system that was not anticipated in this book. It was a lot more important to use this book to read the flat files and see how they were related to each other. The section on Extra Modules (chapter 12) gave a way to improve the server and go outside the scope of this book. This book covered more details than I was looking for; this ways different people can use the book to target their particular needs. You can safely say: "This book has everything you need to set up an apache server." Apache Cookbook: Solutions and Examples for Apache Administrators ![]() Pro Apache Tomcat 5/5.5 (Expert's Voice in Java) $44.99 This book covers the installation and the administration of Tomcat 5.0 and 5.5 in parallel. It does not cover how to develop web applications. Most people probably do not want to read this book from cover to cover. It is possible though, but you should be prepared for a rough ride: Simple topics next to advanced topics, high density information with hardly any redundancy adjacent to pages and pages of screen shots. The parallel coverage of the two Tomcat versions just makes the reading through even worse. This book is more an offline reference than an "I read it all" type of book. The author is competent with moderate skills in explaining things. You certainly should have a solid knowledge of Tomcat, before you pick up this book. You will get rewarded with treatments of topics you will only scarcely find anywhere else: Setting up Tomcat "together" with one of the popular web servers the connector way, or setting up Tomcat in a clustered environment. ![]() Professional Apache Tomcat 6 (WROX Professional Guides) $39.99 I have to prewarn that I haven't completed reading the whole book but I have jumped around to various chapters and have found that this book well very well outlined, and explained. It would be a worthwhile book for anyone getting into web server administration. ![]() Pro Apache Tomcat 6 $39.99 I read this book from cover to cover because I am a tomcat administrator and I need to update from version 5 upto 6. What I got after reading the book is very little. Most of the technical explanations are very shallow, some address -badly- esoteric/complex issues. The contents within each chapter do not mix well, there is no logic flow when reading the book from chapter to chapter. The book lacks working examples, the chapter 14 is completely useless, how can you test the tomcat if you can not set up it properly ? The appendix on MySql is unnecesary, that's not the main bulk of the work for Tomcat administrators. The book seems to be a rush rewriting from a previous book based on Tomcat 5.5. I will give a try to: The Professional Apache Tomcat 6 by Vivek Chopra, Sing Li, Jeff Genender. I hope this time I won't miss the point. |
