The Bottom Line:

The Tall Guy is at its core a guy-meets-girl, blah blah blah arc of a story but the characters are well-drawn by Jeff Goldblum and Emma Thompson, the script by Love Actually and Four Weddings and a Funeral scribe Richard Curtis is witty, and the film thankfully (someone needed to do it) throws darts at the bloated self-important balloon of contemporary musical theater (the film features a musical of the Elephant Man which can boast of a song called "He's Packing His Trunk); it's short, it's fun, it's sadly underlooked and you should rent it.

Napoleon is banished to an island while France is under other rulers. He wants to go home and one of his fellow comrades finds a man who looks like him and they trade places, sort of prince and the pauper type story. The pauper enjoys the luxury of taking Napoleon's place and expects special treatment and becomes pompous and overbearing. Meanwhile, the real Napoleon finally reaches France, stays with Pumpkin a lady who sells melons and such. She falls in love with him but is frightened by his compulsions that he is driven to do and says, telling her that he is Napoleon. There is much comedy, romance and drama rolled up into one. Ian Holm does a brilliant work as Napoleon..very believeable!

This movie is finally available as an official DVD release and is available to download or actual DVD purchase through the Official Warner Brothers website.[...]is the address or[...], look for the "Warner Archive" and search under "Mystery". I got my brand new copy for $19.95 plus shipping. Actually kind of pricey, but well worth it as I have been searching and waiting for this official release. It is Widescreen as well. Very nice clear copy. However, it states on the packaging that it is for use in DVD VIDEO "play only" devices and may not play back in other DVD devices including recorders and pc drives. It played back in my one of my dvd/vhs players but not in one of my other dvd players. But it played beautifully in that player. Just a warning. I hope this helps all you fans of this great movie.
