This plane is a copy of a vintage Stanley plane and while it may not be of "heirloom" quality, it does work exceptionally well. I appreciate the sole is flat, the frog is square to the blade opening, the chipbreaker is true along the edge and the iron holds a keen edge. As with any plane, the iron sharpness is everything. I hollow-grind my irons with a wet grinder, then form the micro bevel with series of wet/dry sandpapers spray mounted on some granite tile, using a sharpening jig. With minimal effort, I can achieve gossamer-thin shavings with this plane, shavings thin enough to read through. The only reason I did not give this plane 5 stars is for the amount of backlash. Meaning if you want to advance/retract the iron, you'll have to spin the adjusting wheel many revolutions to take up the slack before the iron will move. While this is not a deal-breaker, it is a minor annoyance. For the money, I doubt you'll find a better plane. As I said, I use mine (this model and several others) all the time. I strongly recommend it! |
