I'm not sure the ending strikes the right note, but even with a little hiccup Sweet Smell of Success is a fascinating study of human greed and cruelty that is extraordinarily frank and biting for a movie from the 1950s (or any era really); add in a pair of terrific performances by Curtis and Lancaster and it's a heckuva film.

After my first listen-through, I'll admit I wasn't all that impressed; it lacked the polish of the other L7 albums I own (Bricks Are Heavy and The Beauty Process: Triple Platinum). But I gave it another try and realized that was the appeal of this album; it is pure rock in all it grittiness.

I really wish that this group could find mainstream success, because they certainly have the talent. But my guess is it won't happen because they won't cash in on their looks. You can tell that by looking at the covers, both front and back. These ladies don't want to turn you on, they want to rock you, and they do a VERY good job of doing it, IMHO.
