The Punisher No. 50 (Regular Series)

The Punisher was a great character, an anti-hero who devoted his life to fighting organized crime after criminals murdered his family (and a guy who believed the best way to stop a criminal was to kill him), but The Punisher series always suffered from uninspired artwork and, in the mid-90s, poor writing. You can see signs of the problems ahead in the giant-sized, 50th issue of the original series, which pits The Punisher against the dangerously brilliant Yo-Yo Ng. Don't ask me to explain the cover, though, as that blonde you see pictured there is not in the comic anywhere, and I have no idea who she is supposed to be. In the actual story, Frank Castle is tipped off about the instability of the Grand Coulee Dam, a project characterized more by corruption than quality workmanship. After checking things out for himself, he heads off to find the engineer, Yo-Yo Ng, who is currently hanging out in a biosphere he built in the desert (and living high off the hog with all the money he siphoned off the dam project). Upon his arrival, he finds a disembodied head living in a bottle (the writer doesn't even bother to explain how the guy got that way), then he gets in a fight with the bad guys, yada yada yada. Even the disasters that the Punisher is unable to prevent seem of little import. This is a story you forget about immediately after reading it. As a little bonus, there's a short Punisher story that doesn't even feature the Punisher - here, a prisoner tells his new fellow inmates a tall tale about standing up to the Punisher - and gets called on it.

It's a pretty disappointing effort all around for a special issue of a popular title - and, in retrospect, it did not bode well for the future of the series.
