![]() Grizzly H0570 Wood Screw Assortment 100 pc. $1.95 ...if you just need a small, waterproof box of screws. I deal for my boat. ![]() One Good Turn: A Natural History of the Screwdriver and the Screw $14.00 One might think the history of the development of threaded fasteners -- a.k.a. screws -- might not be a riveting read. But that would be wrong; the description actually hits the nail on the head. When I first saw this book I knew I had to drill into it and plumb its depths. You can brace yourself for a bit of history, a bit of politics, a bit of art and the author's long measured thread into the files of his university library. He traces back earlier and earlier depictions of screws and screwdrivers, casting about for circumstantial evidence until he finally hones in on an Ancient Greek origin. Measured against any yardstick this book is illuminating, full of fine details of history and surprising discoveries like a good James Burke "Connections." The scribe makes all this well-crafted erudition educating and fun, hammering it home with personal anecdotes, a delicately humorous touch and burnished to a fine finish. ![]() Kreg SML-C125 1-1/4-Inch No. 2 Coarse Screw (1000-Pack) $23.99 If you are a woodworker you need to get into pocket jointery. Great product. Makes almost any joint extremely secure and very easy. ![]() Spax 4101010000547 Multimaterial Screw Assortment Kit, Large $19.99 The kit does not include the green ACQ Proof screws as pictured. Instead are quantity 14, heavy (#10 two inch, I would guess) flat head screws which require a #3 Roberts square bit, included with the kit. Also included is a #2 Phillips bit, which fits the rest of the screws. A Quadrex bit fits most of the larger screws, but is not included with the kit. All of the screws have a silver color finish and are highly magnetic, so I doubt any of the screws are stainless steel. All of the screws are flathead, except for qty. 30 lightweight 1 1/2 inch pan head fully threaded sheet metal screws. Also, the screws in the far right compartment are not as pictured, they are also 1 1/2 " long (the ones pictured look to be about 3"). The longest screws are 2 1/2" long. I am going to guess this is about one and a half pounds of screws. The bits and holder are well made, but nothing special. The box is well made and should last. So these screws are probably running a pricey fifteen bucks a pound or so. But for someone looking for an organized way to have some wood screws on hand (SPAX says they can be used in concrete, also) to save a trip to the hardware store, they might be worth it. The screws are well made, with serrations to cut into the material. Like another reviewer, I would recommend pre-drilling in particle board, etc. to prevent splitting the material. None of the screws are SPAX's highly touted stainless steel deck screws, a serious omission. And there are no ACQ Proof screws either. I am giving the product 4 stars because of the overall quality of the package, but if I was looking for any of the specific screws pictured that are not included, I would have downgraded it to 2 stars. |
