I came to rails knowing very little about ruby and even less about rails. This book got me started on the right foot. At the end I was able to understand how rails works, although I wasn't able to write any real programs on my own. This book assumes that you know nothing about Ruby or Rails. It's written in a clear, concise and entertaining style, and gave me a good idea how the whole rails framework functions. Agile Web Development with Rails, Third Edition is one of the more popular guides that I'm reading now. It's also a good beginner's book but it might be too difficult for complete newbies. I think I'd have much more difficulty understanding it if I hadn't read Simply Rails.

I was super excited to receive this rail, and especially excited for the low price. However, I should have been more wary that a low price tag meant a sub-par product in this case. The rail is rickety, thin, and downright scary to use. The only positive aspect of this rail is that it is better than no rail at all...barely.

Pretty much all the positive aspects of this book have been covered by previous reviewers. As a rails noob with a still a hazy and sketchy understanding of many, many aspects of RoR, this book is exactly what I need. Its great strength is that it gives a detailed account of Rails, great detail in fact running to just over 900 pages. I have found that as I've worked thru other tutorial oriented Rails books, whenever I've been puzzled by some issue, this book has been very useful. Great resource, highly recommended.

It addressed the real world problems of Rails. It's emphasized the organization and code sharing when you put the Plugin chapter at the very beginning of the book. I got very frustrated on most of the Rails book since they seem to threat database as annoyance and just focus on quick demo app w/o thought of real world apps. If you finish the book Agile Web Development with Rails book, this is the 2nd one to read. It will saves you a lot of trail and error when you go through the large scale application.

You are going to see a lot of advance database stuff here (Postgres) and it will convince you why you should take advantage of those features.

I wish the book has more chapters for "View", authentication and authorization.

Also, having examples with MySQL5 trigger and store proedure would not hurt either.
