The American Academy of Pediatrics defines autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) as "a group of developmental disabilities caused by unusual brain development that begin during childhood and last throughout a person's life." According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 166 children is born with autism. Boys outnumber girls 4 to 1. These frightening facts become terrifying to parents when a doctor brings up the word "autism" in reference to their child. Tenna Merchent knows this feeling firsthand. "When my son's doctor said `a child like your son who is at risk for autism,'" she says, "I felt like he had hit me in the stomach with a baseball bat.
