Promote Visual Perceptual Development through Therapeutic Art: Cynthia Andreas, PhD, ATR
Promote Visual Perceptual Development through Therapeutic Art: Cynthia Andreas, PhD, ATR

This book was created after a 2-year longitudinal research study with kindergarteners and first grade students. These young children were given an art-based pretest (The Troeger Art Skill Sheet) to determine if they were at risk for learning disabilities.

If their art skills were below an age appropriate level, the students were invited to participate in a 20-week program, the Andreas Visual Perceptual Therapeutic Art Program (VPTAP), designed to help with the remediation of potential learning disabilities. At the end of this art-based intervention, the children were given a post-test The Troeger Art Skill Sheet (TASS) to determine if remediation had been successful.

The study findings provided evidence that every student, except one, had developed age appropriate art skills, and had improved their school performance for promotion to the next grade level. To demonstrate that these findings were not due to a Type I Error, a second research study was conducted the next year. The second year's results were even more positive than the first.

This research study can easily be replicated. Including in this text are copies of the art-based assessment (TASS), which was used for both the pretest and post-test. Drachnik's Developmental Chart provides visual images of age appropriate art skills. The Andreas Art Therapy Referral Checklist was created to aid teachers in identifying student behaviors that required immediate attention.

In addition, lesson plans, and examples of artwork created, are provided for each art project during the VPTAP. Further, a sequential breakdown of the VPTAP Procedural Details is provided to aid in replication of this research. Finally, The Parental Informed Consent and Child Assent Forms are provided.

It is the sincere hope of the research team that other educators will find this study to be of value with their students. We are convinced that if children can be identified early in their educational career for being at risk for learning disabilities, they may not suffer and lose self-esteem waiting to be diagnosed in the third grade.

Maps have been used for centuries to help orient us in the physical world, yet they can also be useful tools for making sense of the more abstract world of thought. This remarkable book explores visual techniques for helping students understand how they think so they can become more effective learners. Thinking Visually combines the latest research with effective classroom practices that offer new possibilities for teachers and students. Activities included are designed to: teach thinking skills as part of any subject areas; improve reading and writing skills; support each stage of the learning process; demonstrate and develop intelligence; encourage four essential learning skills that apply to all students, regardless of the preferred learning style; measure intelligence and improvement in learning; explore effective classroom practices for planning, teaching, and reviewing. The visual learning strategies presented throughout the book will help students demonstrate their own thinking, increase their capacity to learn, and assume ownership and responsibility for their learning. Simple approaches to mastering the visual presentation of information range from exercises in categorization to persuasive student examples that illustrate thinking principles. A number of ready-to-use reproducible worksheets complement the text and make it easier to put these strategies to work right away.
