 You'd Prefer an Astronaut $7.99 my favorite album, my favorite band, hands down. ever. i love hum in general, but this is a super-masterpiece. from start to finish, it's epic. i admit, like so many others i was hooked by stars (which is the bane of this album's existence, i think, it's a misleading single. the pod is way more indicative of the album and the band). luckily i loved that track for all the reasons i love the band, so i was rewarded by the rest of the album. i dont know what i can say about it that someone more poetic couldnt say better. it's perfect. it's beautiful, sad, dark, heavy and glorious all at once. one of the things i love most about hum is that they trick you with their heavy-as-all-get-out riffs that hide in beauty. the break-down in stars (or better yet, in dreamboat off downward is heavenward) is just as heavy as anything i've ever heard. and i currently listen to DOOM/sludge/black metal. the riffs are just MIGHTY. i once heard that artistically, dark must always be balanced with light. think of chiaroscuro: think carivaggio. absolute darkness needs a point of light so you know it exists. that balance is what makes it work. too much dark and you end up with someone stupid (like KoRn), too much light and you end up with something like...i dunno...the beegees? anyway the point is i've always sought to find that balance, in music i listen to and make, in art i look at and paint. it's hard. but hum nails it, better than anyone at anything else, in any medium. i hate that matt never felt the assurance or success he needed--because his band moved me. this is the thickest sounding music. track 4 sounds like pudding. and all of it sounds like outerspace. thick, creamy outer-space. and, for the record, the nearly random album cover (i think it's a play on lyrics to suicide machine) is timeless and perfect.
