If you are thinking about this game you should pass. It's boring and pointless. The directions are confusing and the game has no educational or entertaining value. My daughter's version came with a spinner instead of the dice but the point is still the same. Lay down a card, spin and flip the corresponding colored flap. Love the Fancy Nancy books-hate the game.

This is a fairly good, well-written novel that I did enjoy reading, but I was disappointed with the portrayal of one of the characters, Michael Avery, whom the author describes as having bipolar disorder. As someone who is intimately familiar with both disorders, my observation is that what Michael actually suffers from is borderline personality disorder, often confused with and misdiagnosed as bipolar disorder.

The hallmark of bipolar disorder, otherwise known as manic depression, is the vacillation between manic episodes and depressive episodes. During mania, there is markedly increased energy, reduced appetite and sleep, a feeling of being on top of the world, high self-confidence, quick wit, increased sex drive, and talkativeness. Symptoms of depression include lack of energy and fatigue, persistent sadness, problems with sleep (too much or too little), and feelings of hopelessness. The individual with bipolar disorder is the one most affected by these episodes; while either depression or mania can be annoying to loved ones, there's no severe change in the individual's personality.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD), on the other hand, is damaging to friends and family members. Symptoms include frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment, unstable and intense personal relationships, emotional instability, inappropriate anger (often abusive), impulsivity, paranoid ideation, and self-mutilation.

Michael Avery exhibits nearly all of the symptoms of BPD: he is highly intense and unstable, has unrealistic expectations of his girlfriend Julianne, is terrified of being without her for even a day; he vacillates between showing overpowering love and affection, and being self-centered and emotionally abusive. Julianne never knows what condition he'll be in from one moment to the next. He rips his hair, burns himself with a cigarette, smashes his fists into walls (self-mutilating behavior, resulting from extreme inner emotional pain). He is demanding and needy. Collectively, these behaviors indicate BPD rather than bipolar disorder.

I feel strongly about making the distinction in this review in order to increase awareness because these disorders can be so widely misunderstood, even though they are significantly different from each other.
