I am an amateur photographer who found this book to be very useful and I do recomend it for anyone wanting to know the subtle details of photography, but felt it too daunting a task. A true work for the layman as well as the professional, to increase their knowledge of photography. in this book you will learn the importance of the various types of lighting which will undoubtedly increase the quality of the shots you chose to take. The high quality of the author is not to be dismissed here, for without her vast ability one would not be able to absorb the subtle nuances of this artform to the degree I am sure you will after absorbing what this book has to offer.

Though not too much deeper into each topic the book addresses the key on most of the main issues related to portrait photography. I found it one of the most useful books in portrait photography.

I just purchased this book because the reviews were so great, not to mention the cover shot is just gorgeous! Once you open the book, however, the photographs are very dated, like 1970's to 1980's style shooting. The information about what your subjects should wear, shooting in thirds, putting your camera on a tripod or holding it, is really good information but it leaves you wanting more. The paragraphs are spread amoung the many pictures so there's not a lot of reading. I think this is a general guide but for me, as a beginner, I would look for something more detailed, if there is such a book.
