This hand- held device is similar to an actual pen except for the bulge in the center and the overall greater width, making it a little less comfortable than holding a pen but still acceptable since you don't use it with the frequency of a regular pen. Bic Wite- Out Correction Pen contains only 8 ml of fluid. This is less than half that of most bottled liquid paper. But one of this pen's advantages is that it doesn't use as much fluid as the brush- on variety of white- out. Since this pen utilizes a pen- like tip, only a small amount of fluid is released at a time. This makes it a good choice for whiting out a small string of numbers, words, or other characters that are comprised of basically thin lines of ink. You just glide the pen style tip over one end of the line of ink to the other, covering the mistake with a minimal amount of fluid. Even though the BIC Shake and Squeeze correction pen is good for saving ink, it does have some clear disadvantages over other forms of white out. First, the lack of ink flow means this pen isn't a good choice for covering a large amount of space. If you have a large area that needs corrected, you will need to use traditional brush on liquid paper because it will take too long to cover using only this pen. Second, the shake and squeeze process is a little annoying, especially when you first start to use the pen. It takes a good, firm squeeze to get the liquid flowing and you have to keep squeezing as you glide the pen over the paper surface in order to keep the fluid flowing. Also, to get the process started, you have to press the tip on a firm surface in order to break off any dried fluid from the previous use. This is more work than required with other white- out products and it makes the BIC Shake and Squeeze Correction Pen a little bit frustrating to use. The smell of the white- out fluid in this pen is like paint and is similar to other liquid paper products. But since such a small amount is released with each use, you don't notice the bad smell very much. This is another small advantage of using a device like this one. With regular bottled liquid paper, it is often difficult to escape those nasty chemical fumes. With this pen, there is so little fluid released at one time that you don't notice the smell. Overall, I have mixed feelings on the BIC Wite- Out Shake and Squeeze Correction Pen. I like the fact that it uses little fluid and doesn't stink up the office but I don't like having to go through the routine of breaking off the dried fluid from the tip and then shaking and squeezing to make it work. It can get very frustrating if you use this to cover a large amount of space (something it isn't really intended for and I don't recommend doing) and it isn't very comfortable to hold. Still, it does a good job when used for the appropriate task (covering small errors, especially those comprised of single lines of ink). So, I'm going to give this correction pen a middle rating of three stars. It makes a good addition to your correction fluid library but it isn't sufficient to cover all types of mistakes and therefore cannot stand on its own.
