Perry Mason Collector's Edition (Cases of The Buried Clock and Petulant Partner)
Perry Mason Collector's Edition (Cases of The Buried Clock and Petulant Partner)

$29.94
The "Perry Mason" novels were a form of mystery stories where the lawyer is the detective and the solution occurs in a courtroom. A real life court trial is not as dramatic as in fiction. Erle Stanley Gardner often educated his readers with new technology or medical-legal facts, and warned of swindles. The TV shows were simplified and modified versions from the originals or new stories. Some may criticize the tactics of Perry Mason but they represent life before the modern legal rules of the 1960s. The prices, automobiles, and monetary figures date these stories. They record the styles and culture of the 1950s. The many character actors enrich these stories, their emotions are often read from their facial expressions.

"The Case of the Buried Clock" begins at the Sierra City Bank. Dr. Blane is going on vacation. His son-in-law Jack Hardisty works at the bank. [We see what Jack does in secret.] The Bank Examiners arrive next week. Jack confesses to his father-in-law. "Why be a piker?" Dr. Blane calls Perry Mason for advice and help. Paul Drake's detectives lost track of Hardisty. Later Hardisty is found dead in his house! No gun or money. A nature photographer takes photos of wild animals. Dr. Blane's pistol is missing, his alibi is shaky. Paul Drake will check on everyone who knew about the money. They find Hardisty was given a drug before he was shot! The murder weapon was lent to Dr. Blane, his daughter, and Jack. Can a photograph time the presence of a person? Paul Drake finds information about one witness. Should a flash-light startle a person? There are technical questions about photography. What about a buried clock? There is a surprise admission in court that frees Perry's client. The final scenes wrap up the story.

"The Case of the Petulant Partner" begins with a station wagon driving in the small desert town of Bardo in the California desert. The driver hears that Chuck has returned, and they drive to his estate. Harry Bright dropped by to see him. There is conflict. Bright visits Perry Mason for legal advice about the partnership. Does Mrs. Clark sound too good? [Is there some scam here?] Someone checks the background of two people. A murder creates a crisis for Harry Bright. Miss Gridley tells what Salty Sims did. Was the typewritten report forged? Can they figure out who did it? Will Howard Roper have trouble? Perry questions the evidence of the two bullets found at the Clark home. Which was fired first? A test with a pistol proves a point. A new witness is questioned by Perry and new facts come out. The last scene provides a surprise solution. How many people were lying about their activities? This story is rich in conflicts over love and money.
[Note the familiarity with pistols in those days.]
