This lack of interest derives perhaps from the ambiguous integration of peripatetics into these networks as well as the often negatively charged constructs--"Gypsies," "outsiders," or "marginal others"--imposed on peripatetics by dominant cultures. As "peddlers of the strange" to borrow a phrase from Clifford Geertz, peripatetics are situated at the fringes of their host societies and many students of the social ecological, and behavioral sciences still continue to overlook the roles of peripatetic peoples. All told, the essays in this collection provoke vital reassessments of the anthropological focus on the role and status of "cultural brokers" and go-betweens in political, economic, and social interactions. ![]() On Stoic and Peripatetic Ethics: The Work of Arius Didymus (Rutgers University Studies in Classical Humanities) (Volume 1) $29.95 I'm not a scholar, Ph.D candidate, or majoring in philosophy. I'm a common guy who wants to learn more about the four main schools of ancient philosophy which I believe are: Stoicism, Epicurianism, Platonism and Peripatetics/Aristotle's. Apart from Aristotle's own work, I haven't had much success finding books on Peripatetic ethics, so when I saw this title I had to buy it. Just be warned, it is very scholarly and the collection of authors spend a lot of time deeply examining the words of Arius or Aristotle. Perhaps it's just the Joe the Plumber in me, but it seemed unnecessary and nitpicky because the original writings seem clear and much more interesting than the excessive analysis of passages one finds throughout the book. Excusing the hyperbole, one man's trash may be another's treasure. If you take a keen scholarly interest in the latest research on Arius, you may love this book, but bottom line is it's not the common man's intro to Peripatetic and Stoic ethics. I wish I could offer a suitable alternative, but all I know is one book that contains the complete collection of Aristotle's work. 3 stars because the authors did do their best. |
