![]() Sunny Side Up $13.99 I never heard of Paolo Nutini until a few weeks ago when he was a guest performer on "The Graham Norton Show" on BBC America. I'd never heard anything quite like "Lead in My Pencil" before, and I ordered a copy of "Sunny Side Up" the next morning. Apparently Nutini is quite popular in England, and is trying to break into the American market. His voice is pretty good, and he has a good selection of songs, but I don't think he's going to make it here in the US. His voice is very unique, and his musical style doesn't fit into a particular genre--his songs reflect country, music hall, folk, swing. This variety of styles makes the album enjoyable to listen to, but impossible to categorize for radio play. I'm afraid if you don't listen to Graham Norton, you're not likely to have heard of Paolo Nutini. And that's a shame. ![]() Mel Bay Paulo Bellinati Plays Antonio Carlos Jobim $24.95 classical meets bossa . mr bellinati is a master classical guitarist . then combine the genious of Jobim .....Brilliant ! ![]() The Winner Stands Alone: A Novel $25.99 I was excited when my copy arrived as I have always enjoyed Coeho's books. I could barely get through the first 2 chapters and skipped to the end when I asked myself, is Cannes really like that? I had to put the book down and as it is seen in the moment I will not finish it. It was a dark book and one the world can do without now. It is not Coelho's best and I can see why it is being sold at a bargain price. ![]() Dois Irmos $8.99 This recording ("Dios Irmaos" or "Two Brothers") pairs the talents of two popular Brazilian instrumentalists: clarinetist Paulo Moura and virtuoso guitarist (on 6- and 7-string guitar) Rafael Rabello, who died at only 35. They apparently recorded this disc in a single day, putting the arrangements together as they went. Occasionally it sounds like it, but most of the time it's a remarkable meshing of two virtuoso performers. |
