The Naked Bridge Player and Other Stories $17.95 It is refreshing, in this unlettered age, to happen upon a quotation from Horace. Never mind that is misquoted; the original is "He has gained every vote who has mingled profit wih pleasure by delighting the reader at once with instructing him." But Mr.Caplan complains that he "didn't learn anything and wasn't entertained." Humour, is subjective so I'll pass on that item. One's man's hilarity is another man's ennui. But as the failure to learn, may I point out that the hands were contributed by Tim Bourke, the world famous expert player and bridge analyst! This great scholar/chronicler of bridge hands delved into his vast collection of well played and/or defended contracts and supplied a detailed analyis with each. In the book, the bridge players discuss the best lines of play and defense between themselves, and the reader. Not to learn something of value from the narrative is difficult if one has even a passing interest in the game of bridge. Mr. Caplan failed to learn anything? Shame on him. He wasn't amused? Well perhaps that is my fault, but hundreds of readers disagree with him and have reported the opposite of his experience. David Silver Thornhill, Ontario |
