![]() Equity 27006 Battery Operated Analog Alarm Clock (Silver) $9.99 Nice design, but the ticking is so loud that I can't have it in the bedroom, which makes it useless as an alarm clock. ![]() Thomas & Friends - Battery Operated Track Rider $244.99 We got this for our 3-year old grandson for Xmas. The track fit exactly around our Xmas tree (which I pulled out to the middle of the room), so the Thomas the Train with a big bow on the smokestack looked like a real Santa Claus gift, bringing him and us all of the magic of country holidays past. Unfortunately, I did not realize how long the initial battery charge would take, so I had the joy of manually pushing and pulling the train with him on board around the tree for what seemed like hours. He loved it anyways, so much so that he refused to get off to open any other presents for the longest time. After we got the battery fully charged, and he could sit on it alone, he really loved just going round and round the Xmas tree all day long, mesmerized by the tree and filled with the holiday spirit. He still loves it, a couple years later. The only complaint is the push handle, too hard for little hands to hold down, but we followed others' advice to use duct tape to hold it down, and that has worked just fine, easy start and easy stop. I bought it for a lot less at Toys-r-Us, but frankly for the smiles that this toy has brought our grandson, especially on Xmas day, but ever since, too, almost any price would have been worth paying. ![]() 12 Flickering Candle Set Runs on Batteries Flickers Like a Real Candle Battery Operated Tealight Candles Flameless Candle Wedding Tea Light One Dozen Long Lasting Batterry Life $7.95 I bought this set going on over 4 years ago now. I use them over and over again. I love them because I can have the look of the candles without worrying about my little daughter or the cat knocking them over or burning themselves. The batteries are easy enough to replace. Mine are still in working order and I am going to add another set of 12 to my existing set. I have acquired a few different kinds here and there at a cheaper price but the flicker isn't quite the same. These have a pretty good imitation of a real candle. You can't use them in clear containers but they work with everything else. I particularly like them in those holiday red and green or whatever etched votive holders. And the best part is when the holidays are over....no wax clean up. Just pop 'em out and put them away. There's also no scent. Some scents can trigger raging headaches and spoil a great evening for you or your guest so I think that's great. You can always find a way to add a mild scent to something but when you have half a dozen burning candles it's hard to find a balance. I give 4 out of 5. It's a great product and is the next best thing to real. ![]() Life With a Battery-Operated Brain - A Patient's Guide to Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery for Parkinson's Disease $16.95 Being a Parkinson's patient myself who has also had Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery, I appreciated this book for the following reasons: ? It is written BY a DBS patient and FOR patients and their families considering DBS. ? It provides an easy-to-understand, step-by step guide through the entire DBS process (DBS is not an event, but a process, says the author). ? The book provides checklists of questions to ask the neurosurgeon, programmer, and others involved in the DBS process. ? The book has illustrations, photos, appendices with links to other valuable information, with excerpts from the author's personal journals and opinions from other DBS patients. ? The book includes topics such as the DBS evaluation process, making the decision, the logical tasks required in preparing for surgery including psychological preparedness, the impact on the family, a detailed description of what actually happens in surgery, the programming process, care and maintenance of DBS, side effects of DBS and alternatives to DBS. ? It gives power back to DBS patients, arming them with information and questions that they might not have considered. ? It's the kind of book that I wish had existed when I was going through DBS. I highly recommend this practical guide to DBS. In fact, I liked the book so much that I wish I had written it myself. |
