PHP and MySQL Web Development (4th Edition)

I am a self taught programmer and I always felt there was more to PHP than i was getting from other PHP books I had.So recently, I embarked on a month long search of a 'good' PHP book. I am glad to tell everyone else that I have finally found that book. This is right here, this book doesn't make assumptions about your programming skills level - It teaches you what is important whether you already know it or not.

I am so pleased with what is in this book that I feel every PHP programmer should go out there and get one for themselves. I give this book 5/5 - Perfect!

I need to learn about MySQL for my small business. My son the computer tech said this was the book I needed to get me up to speed quickly. He was right. It's concise, apparently complete, and easy to understand, even if the subject is a bit mind-bending at times. Without a book like this, I wouldn't enjoy the learning experience; it would be less pleasant than another knee surgery.

This book is highly recommended by a guy who has read a lot of instructional material in a 40-year career that included service as a part-time college instructor...and by his adult son whose computer library cost his dad thousands of dollars.

'MySQL in a Nutshell' is another solid release in the family of 'Nutshell' books by O'Reilly. As with all other Nutshell books, this isn't a learning book, moreso a shorter reference manual for experienced developers who know what they are using and need a guide to help them out through the process. With MySQL In A Nutshell you are getting exactly that. Spread over nearly 550 pages and 19 Chapters, here's an overview of the content within:

01. Introduction
02. Installing MySQL
03. MySQL Basics
04. Security, User Statements, Functions
05. Database And Table Schema Statements
06. Data Manipulation Statements And Functions
07. Table And Server Administration Statements And Functions
08. Replication Statements And Functions
09. Stored Routines Statements
10. Aggregate Clauses, Functions And Subqueries
11. String Functions
12. Date And Time Functions
13. Mathematical Functions
14. Flow Control Functions
15. MySQL Server And Client
16. Command-Line Utilities
17. C API
18. Perl API
19. PHP API

The layout is good, separation of data is intelligently laid out and the writing is solid. If you are a MySQL developer or admin that is looking for a resource by your side at all times this is a great book to have!!

I purchased this book because of the high reviews that it received from others and it has certainly lived up to those reviews. Ben Forta has a way of cutting through the details by giving concise explanations of each database statement and by providing output examples of each statement. His prose is not so terse as to leave the reader in the dark but just verbose enough to promote an understanding of the MySQL language syntax. This is an excellent book to have next to your computer whenever you need to confirm your syntax or if you need to figure out how to perform a query that may be complex. Even the size of the book is a plus (5.5 x 8 in.), as it's quite easy to thumb through and locate whatever it is you need. Just another great book from Sams Publishing.
