![]() Peak Performances Volume 2 $15.00 I'm a real estate agent and I'm giving this CD as a Holiday gift to all my clients. It's a great gift that appeals to a wide variety of people because the music comes from such a wide spectrum of artists. Maybe I'm a little biased, but the performances are great and you get a whole lot of music for $15. I also like that its charitable and organizations like The Food Bank for Westchester can really use a hand - especially this year. ![]() The Airborne Toxic Event $5.00 At first listen, you think Arcade Fire and The Killers had a beautiful baby boy - but the louder and longer you play this, the more you realize this sound is fresh and very pure. Taking a bit of a leap, its a funked up grandson of Whipping Boy's "Heartworm" - achingly confessional lyrics with monster hooks. "...Midnight" stands out stylewise from the rest of the album - much more grand, certainly the set closer made for dark arenas lit by iPhones. The rest of the songs are choppier, but no less fun. I'm hoping the deluxe version's bonus tracks become available as single song downloads now that I've plunged on the album. ![]() Defining Moments in Music: The Greatest Artists, Albums, Songs, Performances and Events that Rocked the Music World $24.95 This is a very good book. Published in England, it is a chronological listing of what the editor and writers have tagged as the defining moments in western music, starting with the 20th century, through approximately 2004. They are divided into three, maybe four general categories, Key Events, Key People, and Key Concerts and Key Songs. There are two items on each page. Also, the photographs are excellent with some not so often seen ones. What I like about this is that it covers all genres of popular music, not trying to pit some types of music against others. And, the writing is intelligent. For example, Bruce Springsteen's album, The River, is listed as a key album and the writer goes on to compare Springsteen's "The River" to the Clash's, "London Calling", bringing out some very insightful information, that as a longstanding Springsteen fan, I had not considered. The publisher has also put out "Defining Moments" books on movies and books. Though I haven't seen those, if they are as good as this one on music, they will be well worth checking out. |
