It was interesting to say the least. I love reading twisted novels so this was right up my alley. Patrick Suskind's prose, or maybe it's his translator, probably both, is fabulous. I love the descriptions of smell as they were very real and easy to imagine. In places there was a sort of dark, sarcastic humor that I enjoyed although some people might not. An example of this would be in the very beginning: "...Grenouille's mother, who was still a young woman, barely in her mid-twenties, and who was still quite pretty and had almost all her teeth in her mouth and some hair on her head and--except for gout and syphilis and a touch of consumption--suffered from no serious disease..." Isn't that just hilarious? Ahaha. He did a marvelous job of giving us the anti-hero, and you just could not feel any sympathy for the main character, or maybe you can, but he is thoroughly built up to be quite dislikable. I loved how he incorporated subtle metaphorical imagery and symbolism in the novel, and I loved all the little details that showed how he drew out scents from things and then combined them together into perfume. It's a lot of well-thought out research that shines. A good book for those wanting the twisted and for something a bit different and out of their normal, usual genres that they read. |
