Weight of Things: Philosophy and the Good Life
Weight of Things: Philosophy and the Good Life

$23.95
This is simple and yet fascinating insight into existentialism. It does not purport to be a book about existentialism, but the way it goes about prying open questions central to an examination of life, and ruminating on how it is to be lived; and the hints it offers as answers, are existentialistic in outlook. The central theme of the book presses the point that we need to be more conscious of all that we do, and it holds the view that there are more solutions to life's problems if we think hard enough. Some of the solutions, religion for example, can be helpful but not necessary if we have other means of support; and there are other means. Reason and philosophy are the alternatives. It is a book that is easy to read and notwithstanding the pround issues, can be read in a day. The author thought through the issues clearly, and expressed his thoughts lucidly.

I bought the original Free To Be Thin back in the '90's and loved it.
Recently, I purchased the All New Free To Be Thin for my daughter. In looking through it, there are quite a few differences. For one, in the first book you do count calories. In the new book, you don't. There is an added section on exercise in the new book; in the older book, exercise, while extremely important in any weight loss program, was left up to the reader. You were instructed to let God tell you what kind and when to begin it. Though the goals are the same, the approach is different. I just much preferred the original book.
In Search of the Warrior Spirit: Teaching Awareness Disciplines to the Green Berets
In Search of the Warrior Spirit: Teaching Awareness Disciplines to the Green Berets

The author doesn't spend enough time explaining what he taught in this class. Instead, he explains his concerns while he was preparing, and his anxieties after he presented. But he didn't describe what he was preparing, and he doesn't describe the nuts and bolts of what the training was.
From the book, it sounds like he just taught the men to sit quietly. It seems there wasn't enough involved in the class to explain more. Just sit and remain still.
So, i found the focus of the book on the men's reaction to this type of exercise. But if you are a meditation trainer, you won't find info on how to present meditation to this type of audience.
The book could be half the length, the insights derived could have been communicated without so many words.

This book is very informative and backed up with scripture. It has been very helpful to me in trying to change my diet habits while learning to turn to God rather than food.
