Mercenaries 2: World in Flames

The concept behind the Mercenaries series is a good one: Grand Theft Auto crossed with Medal of Honor. You get the open-world freedom of GTA with the intense action of MOH.

Unfortunately, after a great start to the series, Pandemic seems to have released Mercenaries 2 prematurely. While the game is still lots of fun, especially if you're somebody who enjoyed Mercenaries 1, many aspects of M2 feel incomplete or half-baked.

Here are a few examples of how rough M2 is in many places:

*Character dialogue is repetitious and often missing from important places such as mission briefings.
*Background music is limited to a small number of short fragments that are played over and over and over and over...
*Many activities, especially side missions, are bland filler. Gun range challenges, vehicle obstacle courses, flight school missions, and the like are really just glorified training levels. B-o-r-i-n-g!

All of this is disappointing because M1 was such a well-designed game. I wonder if this is due to Electronic Arts publishing M2 (LucasArts was the publisher for M1). As most dedicated gamers know, many EA games have this problem of being shipped out before they are truly ready for the marketplace.

Bottom line: if you dug M1, you'll still have fun playing M2. You'll need your knowledge of how the game world works because explanations of the features and tasks in the game are few and far between. I wouldn't pony up full retail for this game, but the fun/cost ratio is decent if you can get it for a few clams off of the "Greatest Hits" price. If you haven't played M1, download the M2 demo from the PlayStation Network before picking up the full version.
