Late for Dinner [VHS]
Late for Dinner [VHS]

$9.95
I first saw this movie in 1991 in the theatre. I'd long forgotten most of the movie, just remembered the basics of what it was about, and that Brian Wimmer, lifeguard on "China Beach" was one of the stars. I had the opportunity to see this movie just last month and was surprised to see that some 18 years later, I still liked this movie. It's the niceness of the two main characters that carries the unbelievable premise and the unlikely romantic angle of the movie. You just want things to work out for these guys, they're such honest, decent guys.

You get to see Jeanine Garafolo play "Counter Girl" and Michael Beach play a small role as well. Hey, it was 1991.

I purchased this VHS for conversion to DVD because I decided that it was one of those keepers that I'd want to come back to once every 6 years or so.

Just finished watching this pro-war movie. I thought it was surprisingly good. The fake anti-war beginning gets taken over by the pro-war middle and end. As usual, you have the "i hate the army/navy" soldier/sailor, but in the end, their true heroism comes out. This is one of those movies that gives buddy war movies a good name. And pro-war movies. Cain and Robertson play off each other pretty good. I like 50s, 60s, & 70s Britiss actors just to listen to their accents(Burton, O'Toole, Harris, etc.) It's hard to imagine getting such a crappy mission with only 1 day before a 4-week leave period for Robertson. It is said that it had a message to tell about the Vietnam War at the time, but Robertsond and Cain play the "die for my country" heroes just with the right amount of cynicism and patriotism. Worth watching, at least once, to instill pride in the sailors and solders of the US and the UK during WWII and Vietnam.

This book doesn't just boil down all "lateniks" into one or two types. I like that the author addressed lateness issues that stem from totally different personalities -- some of the sections ("the absentminded professor" type lateness) didn't apply to me at all, while the ones that did apply fit perfectly. It's a funny and horrifying read, too, due to the real-life lateness stories -- showing up for an important meeting with two different shoes, accidentally showing a party full of little kids a videotaped birth -- I used to think that kind of stuff only happened to me.

Also, the book doesn't just stop at explaining the cause of the lateness and then leave you to "work through your issues." It also provides little exercises based on lateness types. For example, one of the exercises that I found helpful was learning to put down a book before I was ready to: if you're thinking that's totally unrelated to punctuality issues, think again! Actually, it might not be related to _your_ punctuality issues, but even if it isn't, if you're chronically tardy I bet there's something in this book for you.
