It's a very good album and features some previously unreleased songs by Miss B. ![]() Last Known Victim $7.99 Another story concerning the Malone family of New Orleans police and their loved ones. When a refrigerator abandoned during Hurricane Katrina is found to be full of severed right female hands, the NOPD realizes it has a serial killer. When a later victim is found in a shallow grave with a dead policeman's badge buried with her, it looks like the killer known as the Handyman also killed Captain Sammy O'Shay. His wife, Patti, also a NOPD captain never gives up hoping to find his killer and when a young stripper named Yvette asks for her help, she thinks she found him. Seems Yvette is being stalked by someone calling himself the Artist and she believes he may also be the Handyman. The only problem is that Yvette has told so many lies to the investigating police--which includes Patti's nephew Spencer Malone, and his girlfriend, Stacy Killian--that no one believes her and she gotten herself high on the list of suspects. The reason Yvette turns to Patti? She discovers Patti is the mysterious woman who got into her apartment under false pretenses and searched it and decides to blackmail her into helping out. This is an intriguing story, suspenseful, well-written. It puts you inside the killer's head without giving away the identity. In fact, it's a guessing game as to who it may be. The reader may be certain Yvette isn't the killer but who it really is is a good guess. Although there were a great many suspects , all of them indulging in guilty behavior, there weren't many overt hints as to the actual murderer, and then only a few pages before the revelation. A secondary theme running through the book is Spencer's involvement with Stacy, her wish to have him make that special commitment, and his inability to do so because he doesn't think it's necessary. She should know he loves her, what more does he have to do? Right? Other Malone family members make brief cameo appearances as officers assisting in the investigation and lending support to Spencer when Stacy herself is endangered by the Handyman/Artist. The descriptions of New Orleans life and activities makes me want to go there. The only complaint I have about the book is the selection of one of the victims, a character who's in the story only briefly compared to the others but who captured my attention by his likability. Not having read any other books about these characters, I don't know if he was featured in them or not but if he is, then that will make his demise--though done off-stage with very little description, so to speak--more hard-hitting for the reader. Other than that, I highly recommend Last Known Victim. This was a library book but if I see another in the series, I'll pick it up to see how the Malones are doing. |
