However, I'm not a huge fan of rap music, I usually avoid it, with a few exceptions. I thought John's music would be horrible, but after discovering I loved his entrance theme "The Time Is Now" I decided to bite the bullet and check out his album. I was totally surprised to find it's enjoyable and really, really good. This is rap music I can easily like. It's catchy, upbeat, has good lyrics (most of the time) and most importantly, is FUN. John's music is incredibly fun, and is very likable. I instantly liked this album, and warmed to most of the tracks on the first listen. This is incredible for me, as I can't stand rap music. But I make an exception for Mr Cena and his cousin The Trademarc (who accompanies John on all of the tracks). My favourite track on the album is definitely "Don't F**k With Us" - despite the explicitness in the title, this song is absolutely awesome. It's just soooooo catchy! It's a rather fun track too, with really cool music, enjoyable lyrics and one of the album's catchiest choruses. The lyrics are funny too, I love it when John is rapping about cheese (no I'm not kidding, he really does rap about cheese...) I love this song, it's definitely the highlight for me. "The Time Is Now" is the album's opening track and John's current entrance theme. This the song that drew me to finally check out his album. This song is a lot of fun too, and is instantly recognisable. This is good to sing along to, especially on the chorus. Another favourite of mine. We jump all the way from the opening to the closer of the album now, with the track "If It All Ended Tomorrow." This song played over the end credits of John's movie The Marine and immediately caught my attention. Surprisingly, it's a slower track, but still packs a punch. It's got a good message in it too (about doing the right thing in life and choosing the right path), and very good lyrics. This is the kind of song that even people who don't like rap could like (my mother loves this song and she hates rap music more then me), due to the message and the music (piano of all things). "Right Now" is yet another highlight, it has this really interesting female vocoded vocal on the chorus, which makes the song unique. The music also is interesting, it sounds like a lullabye for a couple of seconds. This is one of the lighter tracks on the album, it's rather happy. I really like the lyrics too, especially the chorus, it's really catchy. This is another track that could appeal to non-rap fans, because the rapping is slower and you can understand John and The Trademarc easily. I love this track. "Just Another Day" is another awesome track, because it has a story to it. John plays himself as the famous wrestler and celebrity while The Trademarc plays a poor person who is struggling to survive. They compare their lives, with John rapping about flying first class while The Trademarc struggles to find transport. John also talks about how he feels about being famous, while The Trademarc complains that nobody knows who he is. It's an unique idea, and it turns out to be a really cool song, with a catchy chorus (I like how John sings "mo money mo problems" for some reason xD) and cool lyrics (The Trademarc: "I'm so broke even my wallet echoes" LMAO). "Don't F**k With Us," "The Time Is Now," "If It All Ended Tomorrow," "Right Now" and "Just Another Day" are my favourite tracks on the album, but the other tracks are good too, here's a short overview: "Flow Easy" features Bumpy Knuckles, and it's an ok track but I don't think John is on this song enough, BK and The Trademarc take over the song. Not one of my favourites. "Make It Loud" is a fun track, with a really really catchy chorus, that is so much fun to sing to. This track sounds like it's live with a crowd cheering. John sings the chorus on this one, and he sounds great. This song makes me smile, it's loads of fun, and the music is cool. "Summer Flings" is another great track. John does a voiceover at the beginning, and a woman sings the chorus, it's rather catchy. "Keep Frontin" didn't appeal to me at first, but after a couple more listens, I started to like it. I love the vocoded vocals in the chorus, they're really cool, and I love the way it goes "keep frontin keep frontin". "We Didn't Want You To Know" is a really cool track, I love the music. The lyrics are interesting, and I love the way they go "if you don't know by now, we didn't want you to know" cos they whisper the last bit of it. "Bad, Bad Man" was a single from the album, so people should know it. This is another fun track, and it's really catchy, and the lyrics are really funny. "Running Game" has a really excellent opening, I love the music. The music continues throughout the song. This song makes me giggle cos John says "pimp" in the chorus, I dunno why but it's funny. "Beantown" features Esoteric and it's about Boston, Massachusetts. I don't listen to this track much, but it's really upbeat and fun on another listen. "This Is How We Roll" is another fun track, again with great music. I love the chorus of this one, it's soooo catchy. "What Now" is one of the album's longest tracks, at 4:31, and to be honest I'm not a huge fan of it. I just don't find it that catchy. "Know The Rep" is a scant 3 minutes long, and I'm sure it features another rapper but I'm not sure who. I'm not a huge fan of this song either. "Chain Gang Is The Click" is a song about John's fans, and this is one of the reasons why I like it. Another reason is the chorus is quite cool and it has amusing lyrics about helicopters or something? This song is all about John as a wrestler. With 17 tracks, there's something for everybody here. This is surprisingly catchy and fun for a rap album and I like most of the tracks on here except for a couple (Flow Easy, What Now & Know The Rep), but everything else is awesome. I wish John had made more music, cos this album is very good. He deserved more success and sales in my opinion. People may call me biased since I am the epitome of a John Cena "fangirl", but I have honestly listened to this album and I like it. It's a very good pure rap album. I dithered over whether to give it 4 or 5 stars, but in the end I went for 5 due to 14 out of 17 tracks being great and it generally being a fun album. |
