John Wesley Hanson (1823-1901) was a prolific writer about Christian Universalism and, for me, the greatest theologian of Universal Restoration since Origen. UNIVERSALISM, THE PREVAILING DOCTRINE OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH DURING ITS FIRST FIVE HUNDRED YEARS (pub. 1899) is the crown jewel of all Hanson's works. In my opinion, this book should be next to every BIBLE in the world! In his Introduction, Hanson notes that others have written on this topic, most notably Hosea Ballou II who wrote
ANCIENT HISTORY OF UNIVERSALISM (1828, 1842, and 1872) and Edward Beecher who wrote HISTORY OF THE DOCTRINE OF FUTURE RETRIBUTION (1878). Hanson states that both of these books are excellent but incomplete and that the
purpose of his writing is to include additional material from the writings of the early Church fathers on Universal Salvation.
