As a graduate student in the Masters program of Social Work I was very pleased to know that a colleague of mine recommended me the book Involving Latino Families in Schools: Raising Student Achievement Through Home-School Partnerships which has been a very helpful resource for me in writing my thesis. Because my thesis is on "The relationship between Latino parental involvement and their middle school student's academic performance" I was delighted to know that there was literature like this book that provided a thorough background on topics such as life in Latino families, the importance for schools to become active partners with Latino parents in order to achieve student success, parents participating in the schools and getting Latinos to College through home-school partnerships just to name a few. I enjoyed the author's strength based approach when working with Latino parents and acknowledging that all families have strengths, through their history, language, cultural values and expectations for their children's success. This book also provided inspiring case examples, personal vignettes, as well as suggestions when working in the elementary and secondary levels (or both levels). The author did a great job at providing information on how essential it is for schools to share information with Latino parents by using both formal and informal verbal and written communication in the language that parent's best understand. I also enjoyed reading how essential it is to incorporate the community and family culture in the school curriculum to create an ongoing partnership. I highly recommend this book to anyone who works in schools starting from the secretary to the Superintendent. In order for Latino students to truly have all the support they need from their school, the entire school needs to make it their responsibility to support, communicate and be culturally competent when working with students and their parents. In order for parental involvement to increase in schools there needs to be an effort to gain the trust of parents and inform them of how they can participate and remain involved in their children's education. This book is a great contribution for our communities, schools, and families.  Careers With Animals: Exploring Occupations Involving Dogs, Horses, Cats, Birds, Wildlife, And Exotics $18.95 The book was a little brief, meaning that it did not really include a lot of careers. Most of them were the more obvious, highly sought after jobs. On the other hand, the information included was extremely well organized and helpful. I would recommend renting this from the library rather than buying it.
