The Inclusion Breakthrough
The Inclusion Breakthrough

$27.95
I teach nonprofit management to mostly masters level students. I peruse dozens of topical books before choosing one for my students. Important to me: (1) book assumes no prior knowledge; (2) book is not so dense and difficult to read that a student would hate me for assigning it; (3) and despite (1) and (2) above, it still gets deeply, academically and substantively into the subject matter. Inclusion Breakthrough does a pretty good job of meeting my requirements, although it gets only 4 stars because there are places in the book through which one must trudge. However, the students take away a solid understanding of the implications of diversity for their workplace, and concrete tools that they can apply. I like this book. I use Jerry Diller's "Cultural Diversity: A Primer for Human Services" instead for students whose interests are in service provision, e.g. hunger, education, mental illness, etc. It is also a good book, although I give it only 4 stars for it's occasional oversimplification.

This book was purchased for a graduate class to help aid in a reference book of special education. This book was extremely useful and something as a teacher I would go back to and review information. The format is great and is very easy to find the information you are looking for. A very great buy for someone in education or taking special education classes.

Excellent, well written book. We shared the strategies with the Inclusion Team. Many teachers had concerns about the process. This gives a good picture to build upon and lessened their concerns.
Inclusion: The Politics of Difference in Medical Research (Chicago Studies in Practices of Meaning)
Inclusion: The Politics of Difference in Medical Research (Chicago Studies in Practices of Meaning)

With Inclusion, Steven Epstein argues that strategies to achieve diversity in medical research mask deeper problems, ones that might require a different approach and different solutions. ?Formal concern with this issue, Epstein shows, is a fairly recent phenomenon. Until the mid-1980s, scientists often studied groups of white, middle-aged men?and assumed that conclusions drawn from studying them would apply to the rest of the population. But struggles involving advocacy groups, experts, and Congress led to reforms that forced researchers to diversify the population from which they drew for clinical research. While the prominence of these inclusive practices has offered hope to traditionally underserved groups, Epstein argues that it has drawn attention away from the tremendous inequalities in health that are rooted not in biology but in society.?¡ÈEpstein¡Çs use of theory to demonstrate how public policies in the health profession are shaped makes this book relevant for many academic disciplines. . . . Highly recommended.¡É?Choice ?¡ÈA masterful comprehensive overview of a wide terrain.¡É?Troy Duster, Biosocieties? (20060925)
