I was late to the Say Hi party (I discovered them in 2007), but this CD actually holds up pretty well even though I didn't hear it when it came out. The vampire theme seems rather cheesy, but they somehow pull it off in a compelling way without coming off as being pretentious, which is an amazing feat. There are also some strange references to Buffy The Vampire Slayer that I thought were amusing (e.g. Angels and Darlas). The basic sound of this CD is layered synths and distorted guitar. Most of the songs have dangerously catchy pop riffs (for me I can't help but bop my head and smile a little when I listen to "These Fangs", for example). For some reason the hooks and the general sound remind me of 70s music (I can see the Ziggy Stardust Bowie reference in the description). The songs are filled with a kind of self-aware irony. For example, the lyrics on "Blah Blah Blah" (which it should be noted is an incredibly stupid/ironic title for a song depending on how you want to look at it) include "And I am gonna drink your blood" but are delivered in an incredibly relaxed (almost lazy) manner. Something about the content/delivery makes me feel like these guys don't take themselves too seriously, which is a good thing in my book. Anyway, this CD is still very much worth giving a listen if you haven't yet! ![]() [3 PACK] Maybelline expertwear Eye Shadow Trio, Impeccable Greys #50 $4.50 Three coordinated eye shadow colors glide on effortlessly with superior smoothness. |
