This book is not for a popular audience but is rather an academic treatise for those who are fairly well-versed in modern theology and religious history. It's more about methodologies and strategies for (basically) guessing what primordial Christianity looked like during a tiny period of time - 20-30 years - when the religion was not big enough to have registered in any written history.

I was somewhat disappointed that Crossan didn't give a linear narrative of "this is what happened after Jesus was crucified, or believed to have been crucified." However, I'm not sure how anybody could present that narrative. And I was very impressed with the many socio-historical details, theories, and, yes, educated speculation that Crossan gave. For example, Crossan theorizes that funeral lamentations may have preserved and provided the facts about Jesus' life that went into the proto-gospel texts. He also analyzed the Didache, the guide to interaction among mendicant-apostles and their lay supporters, to imagine what the earliest Christian practices involved.

All quite fascinating, but this book is like some tough college or grad school level reading.
