![]() Plastic Surgery [CD on Demand] $13.98 Too simple, no cool bass lines? Huh? Hey, it's really hard to keep it simple and clean and still sound as good as these guys do. Anybody can make it complicated. Not these guys. It just comes at you right down the pipe, no gimmicks, no spazmodic special FX.And for sucky vocals, true they ain't Frank Sinatra or the Beatles. But what the hell? It's not Rancid either. This is getting purty close to good ole rock 'n roll before the producers got so smart. ![]() Who Are We: The Challenges to America's National Identity $16.00 In Who Are We?, Samuel P. Huntington makes the case for the resurgence of a strong American national identity. The 21st Century poses immense challenges for the United States. Many have spoken of America's decline as a seemingly inevitable occurrence. Huntington takes a different view. He believes that if we embrace our American identity, then we will be able to postpone or even reverse the process of decline, and return to prosperity. This seemingly uncontroversial thesis proves to be very divisive once Huntington actually offers his definition of "American identity." For Huntington, the Anglo-Protestant culture of our founding fathers represents the true core of the American national character. Therefore, in order for one to be considered a true American, he or she must embrace Western traditions and values, especially the English language. Of course, this proposition is quite distasteful to those who advocate America as a "melting pot". The defenders of multiculturalism have consistently referred to Huntington as a racist who undervalues the equally influential American traditions of diversity and immigration. Regardless of Huntington's political views, it is impossible to argue that this book is not dignified, scholarly work. Huntington went to great pains in his research of American identity, and this book is a polished statement of his findings. One does not have to agree with Huntington's views on immigration, religion, and assimilation in order to appreciate this book. The very nature of the book causes the reader to formulate his or her own definitions of what American identity truly is. This book is both thought provoking and timely. If our nation is going to succeed in the coming century, we will need to formulate a definition of who we are, and what we believe in. Huntington does a great job of beginning that dialogue. ![]() Folksongs from Martha's Vineyard $18.49 Before the island's fame as a tourist destination, the people of Martha's Vineyard looked to the sea for sustenance, & sang about it for entertainment. These fourteen songs amply annotated by folklorist Kenny Goldstein tell of subsistence farming on land & of battles with whales & Englishmen at sea. ![]() Growing Up Is No Fun: The Standards '95-'05 $13.98 Based upon other reviews I expected this band to be something special. Unfortunately, that didn't wind up being the case. Generic, paint-by-numbers half-hearted attempt at punk. It does, however, make a great coaster. |
