Picking Winners: A Horseplayer's Guide
Picking Winners: A Horseplayer's Guide

When this book showed up in the Music Box bookstore in the Hamden Plaza, I was skeptical. OK, the guy on the cover had a moustache. But the Music Box was the best record/music store/head shop/bookstore in town. This guy, Mr. Cohn, had turned me on to Aleister Crowley. What was this book, about such a mundaine subject as parimutuel betting, doing in his shop? I didn't read it, and didn't read it until I was in the position of researching Hugh Laurie, who happens to be a huge fan of the Turf. Every book I read about horse racing referred me back to this one. OK, maybe the fellow who taught me introductory Qabalah several decades before Madonna, is on to something. Well, he is. If you hate gambling, this makes it less of an arcane superstition and more of a science. If you simply love animals, you'll find it amazing how one can race better than another. And if you want to make money gambling...I suppose this is where to start. The man's passion and compassion and love of the sport shine through on every page, and he is a fine writer.
Give it a try.
