This is a perfect compilation and it shows how it should be done, arranged chronologically and covering thoroughly all the albums the band ever released. Caifanes formed in the mid 80's in Mexico City and as you can hear on disc 1, had a very strong influence from the post-punk & goth movement from Britain (mainly The Cure). Caifanes was signed by BMG-Ariola on the wake of the rock in spanish explosion in Latin America and released their first album in 1988, the first four songs from disc 1 are drawn from that album. At first caifanes seemed like rest of the rock groups coming out at that time, they all had new wave influences, but a year later they released their breaktrough single "La Negra Tomasa" an afro-cuban standard song and gave it a cumbia beat with complicated guitar textures. This song was huge and became a standard at parties and weddings, the single was backed by the B-side "Perdi mi Ojo de Venado" also included here. Caifanes seemed to be destined to be a one-hit wonder, but in early 1990 they released the first single of their second album "El Diablito", the song was "La Celula que Explota" and blew everybody away. Caifanes showed that they were developing a style of their own, merging rock music with Mexican folklore and pre-hispanic mitholgy, the music still showed some influences from the Cure but they weren't so evident anymore. In 1992 Caifanes recorded their masterpiece "El Silencio", by this point they had completely develop their signature sound, standing out the work of Guitarist Alejandro Marcovich and the production of Adrian Belew, the first half of disc 2 includes the songs from this album. After touring extensively during 1992-93, founding members Sabo Romo and Diego Herrera left the group. Recording as a trio, Caifanes released their fourth and last album in late 1994. "El Nervio del Volcan" showed the maturity of the band and a tendency towards hard rock, though it lacked the urgency and emotiveness of the first three albums. In 1995 tensions between leader and vocalist Saul Hernandez and Alejandro Marcovich broke up the band. In 1996 Hernandez brought drummer Alfonso Andre and "La Barranca" members Jose Manuel Aguilera and Federico Fong and recorded the first album from "Jaguares", the continuation of Caifanes basically. "El Equilibrio" was a great debut album but the quality of subsequent albums by Jaguares started to decrease. This compilation is a perfect introduction to this great band and if you love them I suggest you to start with "El Diablito" from 1990 and "El Silencio" from 1992.  The Official Story (La historia oficial) $24.98 This is a beautiful, extraordinarily well crafted film about the aftermath of the Dirty War in Argentina from 1976 to 1983. There are several contexts that director Puenzo features in this excellent screenplay. Alicia, the heroine of this film (played by Norma Aleandro) is a high school Argentine History teacher. Her students, by utilizing their own critical abilities and independent research, help her to realize that history is not just about the regime-certified "facts" but rather about freedom, memory and truth. The national anthem at the beginning of the film speaks to Argentine ideals about freedom. Alicia's character grows and changes, with help from the Grandmothers, who were actually the parents of the disappeared, and other peaceful protesters that call for truth, and the recovery of their grandchildren who were taken from their parents at birth while in captivity by the Argentine military. This film works beautifully level through its alignment of the personal and the historical changes, with Alicia representing the former. The society and the individual both undergo monumental development during this era. As Ana, the friend of Alicia, suggests when she finally confronts Alicia's husband Roberto, the ship may well be sinking. It is also interesting to see how the protesters connect, and draw in support from Argentinians, over the loss of the War in the Malvinas/Falklands with the evilness of the military rulers. (One can only wonder what would have happened if Hitler had not lost the war with the Soviet Union, which was a decisive battleground in the Second World War). It is also gratifying see how Ana confronts the former classmate, who heartlessly turns a blind eye to the suffering and unspeakable atrocities that had been waged in this Dirty War against people like Ana, who fortunately got away to Europe before returning to a newer, more enlightened Argentina that is just beginning to grow up, a growing up that reflects a return to its ideals and principles expressed in its national anthem in the opening scene. This film is a work of art that speaks to the need for truth, for justice, for democracy and is a message well worth repeating to people everywhere.  Joan Peir. Sindicalismo y anarquismo. Tena muchas cosas claras, por eso configura su proyecto social, el sentir dentro del comunismo libertario y la formacin de un sindicalismo revolucionario capaz de asumir desde el trabajo, con inteligencia y sabidura, lo que el capitalismo conoce y manipula. Y esto ya no es tan fcil ni tan rpido como algunos piensan. Joan Peir est muy cerca de las pautas innovadoras que conectan el movimiento libertario con la actualidad: solidaridad en la diversidad y pluralidad de propuestas y proyectos. |
