![]() The Hindus: An Alternative History $35.00 This book is just bad scholarship and the author seems to have copy-pasted urban legends floating around the internet and come up with this book. Even the sentence construction is pretty bad throughout the book. Many of her points are superficial claims that she seems to have picked up from internet boards. Some of them are really nonsensical. The author is really naive and does not even seem to realize that no serious reader will accept religion as history or terms like "Christ" as legitimate in a history book. Consider this excerpt that assigns dates to a religious myth and tries to pass it off as history and uses religious terms like "Christ." "When Jesus appeared to him in a vision that night, Thomas said, "Whithersoever thou wilt, our Lord, send me; only to India I will not go." Jesus nevertheless eventually indentured him, for twenty pieces of silver, to an Indian merchant, who took him to work on the palace of the ruler of Gandhara, sometime between about 19 and 45 CE. After a second voyage, in 52 CE, Thomas landed in Kerala or Malabar and there established the Syrian Christian community that thrives there today; he then traveled overland to the east coast, where he was martyred in the outskirts of Chennai. As usual, the interchange went in both directions; in exchange for the goods and ideas that the Christians brought to India, they took back, along with Kerala's pepper and cinnamon, always in demand in Rome, equally palatable stories -- elements of Ashvagosha's life of the Buddha (in the second century CE), such as the virgin birth and the temptation by the devil -- that may have contributed to the narratives of the life of Christ." As an alumnus of University of Chicago, I can tell you with great authority that the author is considered to be a beneficiary of affirmative action for women and is not considered to be a person of good intellect. The poor quality of her scholarship can be seen from the fact that even if she believed in Jesus, a little common sense would have shown that if Thomas had gone to India as claimed, the Christians who were allegedly converted would not be called Syrian Christians but Indian Christians. PASS this book if you want to learn about Hindus. If your hobby is deconstructing pseudo-scholars on Kool Aid and that gives you pleasure, this is the book for you. ![]() Hindu Gods & Goddesses Party String Lights (SJ) $8.00 Great indoors and out, as a room accent.
