Teaching to Change Lives: Seven Proven Ways to Make Your Teaching Come Alive

Hendricks goes far in communicating his core concepts for teaching. Despite a rather meandering style and the somewhat overlapping ideas represented in the seven laws, there are buried some crucial insights.

One section stood out in this regard: that on the Law of Activity. For instance, he says (on p.60), "In the spiritual realm, the opposite of ignorance is not knowledge, it's obedience." This fantastic (and convicting) statement, offered almost as a `throw away', is fundamental to his entire approach to teaching. Teachers are change agents, and if the subject matter is scripture that change is measured in lives lived in conformance to Christ. This measured emphasis on application, while not unique, was very effective in this context.

Also within this section was the uncommon assumption about what to expect from the learners. It is important to engage and challenge - and not simply entertain. Contemporary organized religion seems to oscillate between dead rituals and intellectually empty production values. Hendricks' assertion that it is not unreasonable to require intellectual effort from learners was refreshing.

Perhaps in correlation to this is the fact that the author's actual presentation methods and techniques (the subject of the section on the Law of Communication) were not emphasized over the other laws. Most contemporary work on preaching and teaching seems to focus on this as the most important aspect of ministry.

Finally, the lesson plans for teachers in each of the seven laws are tremendously worthwhile, and they demonstrate a real commitment to the reality of his contentions. These exercises could be inserted as is into any curriculum preparing teachers for ministry. They could well have been included in each chapter rather than as an appendix.
