Other reviewers provide deeper analysis, but I'd just like to say that this book is probably my favorite novel of all time. I believe the ideas laid out in this book probably changed my life. And I'm proud to boast that I now own the painting by Carl Lundgren that was used as the cover art to the Berkley and Ace editions from the 1980s. Yes, I was so obsessed by this book that I eventually tracked down the artist and bought the cover art!

Reading several of the other reviews of this book, one would conclude that if you haven't read several other Heinleins, then you won't understand this book and will be unable to enjoy it. I haven't even heard of most of the other books the other reviews suggest you read before you read this one.

I read one or two other Heinleins before reading this one, but thirty years ago. Anything you need to know in order to understand and enjoy this book is explained in this book. No doubt, you'll have a greater depth of understanding if you first read all of those other books suggested by the other reviews, but this book easily stands alone.

It's a great story with lots of depth, but it doesn't drowned in the details. Politics, love, adventure -- it's all in there.

Heinlein's disdain for politicians doesn't stop him from knowing that the game of politics is the most important thing for all sentient life. The ablility for living things to live together in harmony, and for the greater good, hinges on interactions in the political arena, and that is the true nature of this story. The subtext of the well-woven plotline is secondary to the lessons learned by the protagonist, and that is what makes this great literature. Read the book, don't just watch it like a TV show, and you will know. Another great by the best.

Stranger in a Strange Land

The publication of the uncut version was a great blessing. It is just as readable as (perhaps more readable than) the original, heavily edited version. A lot of little things make more sense in the uncut version, and you get a much better understanding of what Heinlein was trying to convey.
