A thirteen year old boy loses his mother to a drug overdose. He escapes from a potential foster
home and hits the road hooking up with a rough, chain smoking, Canuk. The film was made in Canada
and part of the funding came from Canadian television. The boy has basically been living on his
own since his father disappeared and his mother, being a junkie was not able to take care of him.
In order to make a few bucks on the side, he becomes a street hustler and the movie opens up with
him laying on a bed after having sex with an older man. The movie limps along losing focus and
the ending is totally out of the pages of a Hollywood tear jerker. Probably some truth in parts
of the film, but the bizarre ending ruins would could have been a much better film. Fine acting
esp. by Branden Nadon who plays the rent boy. David Schultz wrote and directed it.

Recently I received two new films from director Toby Ross, "Live for Sex, Die for Love" (reviewed here separately) and "Straight Boys, Gay Boys". Both are eye openers with lots to look at. However "SBGB" is overtly erotic and I am sure will be classified by some as pornography and I do not mean that negatively. It is very hot and focuses on the games some gay men play in order to seduce those guys who are basically "straight". The guys are very hot and, of course, well equipped. Each of the five segments is different except for the sexual aspects and the good looking guys. There is a lot of skin and a lot of "personal advantages."
The first segment deals with a straight guy searching for a girl online. Instead of getting "her", he gets "them"--a gay boy and a straight girl whose aim is to turn him on until he is so hot that he won't care if a guy has sex with him. Then there is the story of a straight boy who is taken "advantage" of by a gay boy who has just what he needs. An ex-marine in need of sexual release agrees to oral sex with a gay boy is segment three and segment four is about a plumber who enjoys having sex alone in the shower finally succumbing to hidden desires. Finally, a "psycho" takes care of himself as we watch his beautiful feet and heavy apparatus.
There is not much new here---we all know the techniques BUT it is fun to see it acted out. It is almost like living a fantasy. The film is pure fun and the guys are definitely worth a look-see.

Coming-Out

Although not a new boom, Patrick Merla's "Boys Like Us" is an interesting collection of twenty-nine coming-out essays by some of our most prominent gay writers. Merla, himself, has been active in gay publishing as a literary agent and editor and has therefore been able to bring together such a collection. We get all kinds of encounters which result in revelations about the gay lifestyle and coming to it for the first time. Each essay has a defining moment from which each life is changed forever. The book looks at the meanings of coming-out and most of the selections are intense.
Beginning with the pre-Stonewall era the book progresses to the 1990's and we get a good overall picture of homosexuality and the way it is considered. Each essay also has a photograph of the author and each is written in the first person this making the selections very personal.
Many of the selections are moving and I found myself laughing and crying as I read. The topic is important and the book is very much needed. This is a book to be read and reread and shared.
