I only bought this for the one track; Love Unlimited Orchestra's "Strange Games And Things". I'd had the funky, string-laden instrumental number (written and produced by the legendary Barry White) on a rare groove compilation tape for years and had always wanted to get it on CD. The original album it came from, 1976's "My Sweet Summer Suite", seems impossible to find on CD and so to my mind this was the next best thing. It's got the full extended 8min 28sec previously unreleased version on it and as long as I had that, I would've been well and truly happy, and prepared to rate the CD with five stars on the basis of that one song all on its own.

I was pleasantly surprised though. I had hoped at best, to like at least one or two other tracks on here but I did a lot better than that:

"Is This The Best (Bob-Doo-Wah)" by L.A. Boppers is a delightful tune and I'd never heard it before. This compilation features the original full-length LP version.

The 12" remix of Kool & The Gang's "Ladies Night" is interesting and may play well in clubs and at parties but I found it superfluous and repetitive. The original album version, which I've been listening to for almost 30 years now, is about as close to perfection as any song can get as far as I'm concerned.

Starpoint is a group I remember hearing a lot about back in the day but I can't remember any of their tunes and don't have any of their albums. The 12" mix of "I Just Wanna Dance With You" is an okay tune but nothing special, in my opinion.

Kurtis Blow's "If I Ruled The World" probably needs no introduction. I've always preferred his original to the Nas/Lauryn Hill cover and this original 12" remix is solid. Old-school hip-hop at its finest.

Cashflow's "Mine All Mine" is another huge one. I always used to get it confused with The Fatback Band's "I Found Lovin'". Brilliant tune.

The 12" original Tee Scott remix of Junior's "I Can't Help It" is also interesting but nowhere as good as "Mama Used To Say", apparently the only real hit he ever had. A mystery to me because I always thought the man was quite talented.

And finally, Central Line's "Walking Into Sunshine" is one of my favourite dance tunes ever and the original Larry Levon 12" remix on here rounds up the CD very nicely, thank you.

If I haven't mentioned any song it's because I don't feel it merits mentioning. Not that I'm suggesting that any song on here is bad. It's all a question of personal taste, after all. One man's meat and all that.

Still, considering I purchased the CD for just the one song, I think I've been very lucky indeed. This is a great compilation, well worth checking out. Especially if you're into old-school like I am.

How to Improvise a Full-Length Play: The Art of Spontaneous Theater

I find "How to improvise a Full-Length Play" to be the best formula that I have found for improvised structure. I have read many books on plotting and improvisation in my thirty years of teaching. This presents a simple and compelling plotting scheme.

The idea of the protagonist creating the climax of the play by acting on a third character, alone, is worth the price of the book.

I have used this structural idea in both straight improvisation and in devising a rehearsed play in which the students use their own words. In this latter case I plot out the shape of the plot from student created characters and situations.

Students are delighted that they can have considerable latitude in either improvised or devised pieces as long as they hit the basic plot points.

I find myself checking the structure when watching films and plays. It seems to work more universally than any other plotting scheme that I have found.
