The main attraction for me with this set(I've only viewed disc #1)is the 8 performance's culled from two television shows, both German I think. The rest of the disc has interviews with the 3 surviving members which are all excellent, a silent home movie of the band performing, a clip of them performing All Right Now on Top of the Pops and a couple video's. Beat Club, from which the first 3 performances were filmed really got me hooked. Watching Paul Kossoff nursing the sounds from his guitar, I couldn't take my eyes off of. The extra-added attraction is seeing and hearing what an inventive bass player Andy Frasier was as well as observing their drummer Simon Kirk, how steady yet powerful and able to add flourishes during the perfect moment. Least important to me as I watch Free is singer Paul Rogers who I tip my hat to and I know he has many fans, as I've read their testimonials here in the other reviews, but for some reason I'm just not overwhelmed by his singing style. Not so is the case of underwhelmment concerning Kirk, Frasier and especially Kossoff as he caresses beautiful sounds from his guitar or relentlessly pounds out a riff ala All Right Now. The 3 songs from Beat Club are Mr. Big, Fire and Water and All Right Now but All Right Now is obstructed by pictures of the band as they perform the song. But Mr. Big and Fire and Water are excellent as you can watch the band performing this with full view. The 5 songs from Granada Tv that follow the Beat Club numbers are Ride on a Pony, Mr. Big, Songs of Yesterday, I'll Be Creepin and All Right Now and this is the portion of the disc that I REALLY loved. Filmed before a studio audience who largely just sit there motionless as they watch the band. A bobbing head or two but by and large it's almost as if the audience is made up of people-looking props set in seats. It's pretty funny to watch them. I think back then it was a much cooler thing to do to just sit there absorbing it all in. But I LOVE watching Free run through their 5 songs on this. I think this two disc set is worth buying just for the Beat Club songs and the Granada TV songs alone. |
