![]() Implementing Application Frameworks: Object-Oriented Frameworks at Work $75.00 This book presents more than 25 case studies in framework development. The approaches are varied. Some are very nuts&bolts, others operate at a much more philosophical level. Some of the more interesting topics involve component-based systems, hardware design, and several applications of design patterns. The whole thing, including 50 pages of end matter, weighs in over 700 pages. The writing is dense and packed with data. It's a real goldmine of information. The problem is that a goldmine, these days, typically yields one gram of gold per tonne of ore. Extracting this book's information, the real usable content, from its data is about like extracting that gram. Maybe that's appropriate, though. Framework development is not as well understood as lots of other kinds of software, and the first step in any science is to collect specimens. I've found my nuggets in this book, as other readers have found theirs, but different people find different nuggets according to their needs and interests. If you have an active interest in framework development, and if you have time and energy to distill over 650 pages of raw data on your own, this book may be for you. It really is not for the beginner or the casual reader, though. ![]() Programming Entity Framework $54.99 EF is a reasonably complex topic and I applaud anyone who makes a sincere attempt to write about it. However, months after reading this book, I have decided that it only marginally helped me in my training for EF. It is written in a disjointed fashion as if the author was still puzzling the material even as she was submitting it for publication. If her knowledge of the subject is comprehensive, then the problem is she doesn't have the ability to convey it in a comprehensible way. I got it because there was, and is, still relatively little material on the market about EF. It did help me a little when I decided to use it as an occasional reference; sometimes I found a concept that helped me in isolation. Until a lot more and better quality material information is published, if you must learn EF for a medium to large project, then I recommend getting everything you can get your hands on including this book, but rely more on MSDN, StackOverflow, random Google searches and, of course, experimentation to round out your education. Where is Stephen Walther when you really need him? FWIW: The good news is that once you understand EF, it really will change the way you write code, and your applications will absolutely fly. ![]() FrameWork $18.95 This is a great book. It describes how to design an exercise program that will not wear out your body parts. This will allow you to maintain maximum fitness over your lifetime. It is invaluable if you want to be fit for life. ![]() 3 Minutes to a Pain-Free Life: The Groundbreaking Program for Total Body Pain Prevention and Rapid Relief $16.00 When I first read an ad for this book, I thought it was just another book being sold for somebody's profit. However, as I read the ad there was a challenge for the reader to try two examples of the stretching exercises. One of the exercises was for back pain and another one for shoulder pain, so I decided to try them both. To my great surprise both of these exercises worked immediately. I had been experiencing pain in my back and shoulders, to a degree, which caused me to wake up from a deep sleep at night. Upon trying both of these stretching exercises I felt immediate relief from pain and since using these exercises daily I have not experienced the pain at night where it was truly troublesome or during the day where it impacted on my ability to perform my duties at work. Subsequently, I have purchased three more copies of this book and given them to family and friends who were also experiencing pain and discomfort. The people to whom I have given this book have reported success in eliminating pain and discomfort that they thought they might have to live with forever. While initially pain may not be immediate or totally relieved, in all cases, continued use of these exercises does result in total or great elimination of the pain. However, one of the great benefits is the increased motion and mobility of joints and muscle groups. I now find it easier to put on my socks and tie my shoes for example. Doing these exercises does not require great strength or great effort nor does it take a great deal of time. I recommend this book highly, and I will be purchasing more copies to give to family and friends. |
