![]() Footsteps (Buru Quartet) $17.00 I agree that this third book of the great Buru Quartet should not be read first, as it would be not make sense, and therefore might be boring. Yet, it is the necessary transition between the early life of Minke (Toer's alter ego) in books 1 and 2, and the final summary book, House of Glass. It covers the important period when Menke becomes convinced that he must lead his people against the oppression of the Dutch Government, which he does by the power of the pen. I read 4 first - then 1,2,and 3, and I think this actually may work better than reading them 1,2,3,4. Taken as a whole, the Buru Quartet is a powerful, magnificent work, and we can see why it was earlier banned. It is an education in the history and culture of Indonesia, combined with several touching love stories, concentrating on the people of the Island of Java. The books may be more enjoyable if you are familiar with Java and more educational if you are not. Either way, even if read just as a novel, the writing is superb. ![]() In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great [VHS] $29.98 There are no reenactments by second-rate actors; neither are there detailed examinations of ruins, nor are there dry recitations of historical facts from graying academicians. Yet the West was much more. It was a vast unknown. Those who ventured into the West had to adapt to survive. Basketball coach Pat Calvin and player-coach Sherry Gallagher, happy for the off season and for time to settle into their new relationship, suddenly find themselves rediscovering a past they never knew existed. On a tour of Missoula, the women discover, in a second hand store, an old journal which contains glimpses into the life of two women, Jesse and Jennifer Branson, who lived in Western Montana over a century before. Pat and Sherry decide to try and find the locations described in the journal even as their happiness is interrupted. Pat is spitefully accused of actions which, if proven true, could end her coaching career. As Pat and Sherry fight for their future, they come to understand that women in the west have been doing the same since Montana was a frontier. ![]() Footsteps $14.98 I can't believe Candice Bergen was in this movie...hello!!!! The acting was terrible, the plot was so..whatever. I believe we've been there and done this before. According to the synopsis, it should have been like a newer version of Misery. But it was NOT! Terrible acting by everyone. Please, leave this one on the shelf. |
