Fenix LD 20 6 Level High Performance Cree LED Flashlight, Black, 6- Inch, Maximum 180 Lumens
Fenix LD 20 6 Level High Performance Cree LED Flashlight, Black, 6- Inch, Maximum 180 Lumens

$78.00
I was looking for a versatile flashlight, mainly for walking at night, that I could use for hours on a standard set of AA batteries. The Fenix LD20 fills the bill. The turbo mode is brighter than high mode, but not significantly brighter. I don't plan to use it often because it eats batteries much faster for a little more light. The the strobe mode might be good if you were walking on a busy street at night and wanted to be noticed, but I don't think I will need it. At least it isn't a mode you normally have to cycle through because it is with the turbo mode (cap tightened). I would prefer not to have the SOS mode. It is useless for 99.99% of people and you have to cycle though it in the normal modes. The 3 normal modes are just right for me. Low is good for close up work and short distances (10 feet) if you want to conserve battery power. Medium is perfect for a well-lit night walk and most other uses and is easy on batteries. High is also good for night walks but uses up the batteries faster, very bright. The light is a white color, no hues. The spot and diffused areas are perfect. This light is the ideal diameter, length and weight to feel comfortable in your hand. Very pleased with this light.

Update after using flashlight

After using the flashlight at night for walks, I determined that medium mode is enough light, but high mode is really much better and worth the extra battery cost. I decided to get rechargeable batteries anyway. This flashlight seems to have a characteristic that makes it drop down to a lower mode if the battery voltage is not high enough to give the mode you ask for. After a 1 hour walk, a brand new set of off-brand alkaline batteries was already down far enough that the flashlight would kick out of turbo mode. I suspect that when they stated the expected battery life, they were using NiMh or Lithium. Anyway, it is probably the same with any flashlight with this same LED, so if you are going to use it regularly like me, I think NiMh are a good idea. I did have an early-hour problem with the flashlight, but I think I fixed it. In normal mode, it was always on high. It would cycle High-high-high-high flashing instead of low-med-high-high flashing. I suspected by the way it acted that there might be some dirt or a microscopic metal shaving that was shorting it out in the head across the turbo ring. I actually did have a problem with a circuit one time due to a microscopic metal shaving. I took the head off and cleaned it out with a brush and blew it out with air. Now it works fine and I can't get it to fail, so maybe that was the problem.

Fenix mini LD01 CREE Q5 80 Lumens LED Flashlight - black color, using one AAA battery
Fenix mini LD01 CREE Q5 80 Lumens LED Flashlight - black color, using one AAA battery

$56.00
I bought this light in August 2009, and waited to make a review of what i really thought of this. I bought this on eBay with a good deal of 38.95 usd and free shipping - new.
I also purchased some rechargeable Energizer 850 mAh ACCU batteries for it, and so far, I charge them once a week, with considerable use every day.

Pros-
1. The best quality light I have ever owned, hands down. I have yet to own a Surefire, but I'd bet it's on par with the quality. The aluminum body is pretty thick, about 1mm.
2. Twisty switch will last longer than a click switch, and is easier on the batteries. Also prevents turning on. I have never had it turn on by itself.
3. Yep, it's waterproof. I have swam with it, 9 feet deep in a pool until the batteries went dead (about 45 minutes). I knew that Fenix wasn't lying, but I tried it first under the sink while it ran before I risked it.
4. Reflector is smooth, so it throws the beam and clearly illuminates objects 200 feet away. A bumpier reflector would have made it floodier.
5. Perfect centering of the LED emitter and perfect focusing. It WILL NOT, ever produce a donut hole, like Maglites (yuck!).
6. Stainless steel clip has saved it a few times, and the clip is very secure.
7. Amazing output (80 lumens) is the same as my 4-D maglite on a stock bulb.
8. Amazing runtime on low. I have tested it for about 10 hours once, then got tired of watching it.

Cons-
1. Heats up significantly on High after about 10 minutes, and medium after 1 hour. The LED produces a lot of heat, so this is forgiven by me.
2. Certain batteries rattle, but I just throw a patch of electrical tape on them and the added diameter reduces rattle to nearly none.
3. Requires cleaning on the contacts every month, or it starts flickering.

Conclusion-
The best AAA flashlight you'll ever own. Period.
I carry it every day, and I have gotten joy from it once because a guy once lost his car keys, and was searching for them with a pathetic Maglite Solitaire (1 or 2 lumens). I about blinded him and he found them after adjusting to the output of my flashlight.

I have owned many small maglight style flashlights. While a little more money than the others, the Fenix L2D is well worth it. The beam is fixed but has a smooth transition from center out. This replaces a Coast LL7848 as my everyday carry torch. The LL7848 is also a fine light but not as bright as the L2D and will remain in the toolbox. I appreciate the ability to adjust light levels to save battery life when the full brightness is not necessary.

I just got the Fenix TK40 today. As always, I opened the package and didn't read the instructions. When I first switched it on I was so disappointed. I thought it was no brighter than my AAA LED flashlights that put out 100 lumens. I was ready to return the flashlight to Amazon. I then realized since the reviews were so good I must be missing something. I decided to read the little instruction pamphlet.
WOW
When I clicked to the proper brightness I was floored. Super white light. Not blue. Clean white light.
What I like also is that it reminds me of the old days when you had a flashlight with 2 D cells. It feels good in the hand. It is not a little portable light but it is awesome.
What is also nice is the battery holder has little + and - signs so you load the batteries correctly.
I have 8 eneloops in there now and have it set to the second to highest setting (277 Lumens) I am curious how long the batteries will really last.
