I regret buying this particular product because it is heavier than I expected, and I went with mace instead. However, this disappointment is not what influenced my 4 star rating. Rather it is the anti-rust coating that looks a little thin in spots and that doesn't have me firmly convinced of how long it might last if continually exposed to the elements. I don't know how to explain it other than to say you get what you pay for. You can just tell the quality by looking at it. There are professional grade batons, like the ones made by ASP, but you'll pay $100 or more for one of those. I gave this 4 stars because, for the money, it seems to have an acceptable level of quality. It has decent weight to it so you know it will impact well. The handle is rubberized, and seems secure on the baton with good grip. The baton opens with a hard flick of the wrist, and it snaps quickly into a firmly locked position at its full extension. Unlocking is done by hitting the tip on the ground to snap it out of its locked position. I was unable to do this on carpet. It requires a hard surface like a rock or pavement to unlock it. Using some type of lubricant for metal parts can also help it out. The holster it comes with it is ok, and can be mounted on a belt. Again, not the most impressive thing, but adequate. It has a velcro strap that secures the baton at the top most part. The baton also rattles. When it is in a fully closed position, there are spaces inside which gives the unit room to rattle back and forth internally. This is not a noise free unit. I would encourage folks who want to use this for self defense to do some research on the web first. I landed on a website where they were talking about the effectiveness of using batons like this, and many of them seem to believe that this tool is largely ineffective on a very large person (especially not aluminum ones since they are so light - which this one is not). It just does not have enough weight unless you are trained to know the key points of the body to hit, even if it does have the weight of steel behind it. The thoughts on that website was that stun guns are much more effective and reliable. I personally wound up purchasing a mace. The one I have is the stream version rather than the spray (requires more accurate shooting, but better outside in a windy area since there is less risk of kickback). Not all maces are high quality, so certainly do your research before buying if that is the road you choose to go down. I am sure there are situations where this baton will be very effective and helpful. But if you are a woman who hopes to protect herself from a potentially large person, this may not be the product for you. ![]() Avon Anew Retroactive+ Youth Extending Cream Night $24.00 AVON ANEW RETROACTIVE+ Youth Extending Cream Night - 1.7 fl. oz. : This proactive cream is formulated to fight micro-damage better than before.
